Are you ready for the best Bali photo tour ever created? No hype! Packed with rare image making opportunities, this is precisely what multi-major award winning photographer & National Geographic contributor David Lazar has personally designed for you. With the assistance of Indonesian master Rarindra Prakarsa, what the Luminous Journeys team has done for next level photo tours in Myanmar, we now bring to Indonesia and this legendary island paradise.
Beyond Bali’s well worn tour bus routes, David Lazar’s Luminous Bali is a 4-island, 14-day photographic journey into the true heart of the Island of the Gods. Bali is of course famous for its incredibly lush rainforests, beautiful waterfalls, ethereal green rice terraces and soaring volcanoes. But the island is far more than a paradise for landscape photographers only. The culture is incredibly rich, colorful, and ceremonial, and people photography and portraits will also feature prominently. With David & Rarindra, two of the finest travel portraitists in the world leading you, it’s only natural.
In addition, this unique Bali photo tour offers two very special events to which you will have exclusive access and freedom to photograph – wet & wild buffalo bull races near Negara, and 45 Balinese Legong, Ramayana, Fire and Kecak dancers, both in natural and stage settings.
There will also be two fantastic, once in a lifetime documentary photo opportunities. First with the seaweed farmers of Lembongan Island in their amazing setting, and later when you venture to East Java to photograph the Kawah Ijen Volcano-scape, its otherworldly sulfur miners, and inextinguishable Blue Flame. Also, for those opting in, David will lead an underwater photo shoot in arguably Bali’s best dive spot, Menjangan Island. For those who don’t dive, the snorkeling is easy & awesome, either with camera or without. Or you could opt out, sleep in and breakfast by the pool! This is your Bali photo holiday after all.
Luminous Journeys ‘prime directive’ is to always put our guests’ image making first and foremost, thereby ensuring they get the utmost out of their Bali photo tour experience. Both of your photographer guides exemplify this beautifully. Any travel photographer, novice to pro, stands to gain a tremendous amount from working with two great professionals and fine gentlemen like David Lazar and Rarindra Prakarsa.
Be sure and click on the tabs above for more Bali photo tour details. See you in Bali!

May 1 – 14, 2015
“Passionately designed and filled with once in a lifetime photo opportunities, this is definitely a Bali photo tour like no other.” — Pande Sura, Veteran Bali Guide
Fri. Day 1 – Sanur – Orientation & Slideshow – Private Legong Model Shoot – Kecak & Fire Dance Performance – Beachfront Welcome Dinner – Overnight Sanur, Bali
A brief “what to expect” on your Bali photo tour and “get acquainted” session with eye-popping slideshow from David and Rarindra. (Just call him “RP!”). Then it’s off to your first privately arranged photo shoot. Two lovely lady Legong dancers in full costume will be at you service both on stage and off in a rice paddy setting. Also present will be 3 costumed lady Ramayana Dancers and 40 male Kecak dancers! The big show follows, then back to the hotel for your special welcome dinner.
Sat. Day 2 – Sunrise Fishermen, Arranged Shoot – Traditional Morning Market Free Shoot – Gamelan Workshop – Lembongan Island – Afternoon / Sunset Seaweed Farmers – Overnight Lembongan Island
Hard to beat the picturesque action of a fishermen’s net catching the rising sun… Then breakfast @ the hotel followed by Bali’s best( unknown to most all tourists) traditional morning market.
Continue to a nearby Gamelan (Balinese percussion instrument) Workshop for some wonderful environmental portrait opportunities. Lunch back in Sanur and then off to beautiful Lembongan Island, only 30 minutes offshore. The seaweed farming scene here is exhilarating to the eye, and unique photo ops abound!
Sun. Day 3 – Lembongan Island – Sunrise Seaweed Farmers – Free Time – Return to Bali – Tenganan Rice Terraces Trek & Shoot – Bali Aga Village Portraits – Overnight Mahagiri, East Bali
Sunrise on Lembongan creates a new palate from which to select your images among the affable seaweed farmers. Breakfast @ our new hotel with a very unique view, some free time for a swim or image review, then return to Bali in time for lunch!
Your first true Bali photos of rice terrace landscapes will come this afternoon at Tenganan. Here you’ll trek the rim of the ravine covered in ethereal green rice paddies backed dramatically by Mt. Agung volcano. Even though Tenganan is well known for its beauty, it sees few visitors this far away from the main tourist zones.
The trek & shoot completed, it’s off to the other side of Tenganan to meet Bali’s last remaining original tribes-people, the Bali Aga. Here David & Rarindra will lead you in an arranged model shoot showing you exactly how they make such consistently fantastic travel portraits.
Mon. Day 4 – Mahagiri Sunrise – Agung Volcano & Rice Terraces – Besakih Mother Temple – Free Time / Image Review – Tukad Unda Water Shoot w/ Local Kids Overnight Lake Batur, Northeast Bali
Another exhilarating sunrise photographing one of the greatest rice terrace / volcano-scapes, not just on Bali, but anywhere on earth. Amazingly, it’s still little known by Bali photographers, let alone foreign. Bring your graduated filters!
After your breakfast with a view, Bali’s “Mother Temple”, Besakih, beckons. Just 10 minutes away you’ll enjoy an hour or more free shoot around this iconic location on the slopes of Mt. Agung.
Enjoy free time at the hotel until late check-out and lunch. We’ll arrive at the Tukud Unda spillway about 3 pm, where kids after school make great subjects as they frolic in the two-tiered “waterfall”.
Tues. Day 5 – Lake Batur – Misty Morning Scenes – Traditional Lake Farmer Family Shoot – Volcano Backdrop & Lake Reflection – Optional Image Review / Free Time – 10 Falls of Sekumpul w/ local models pending – Dinner @ Lovina Beach – Overnight Munduk, North Bali
Today’s photographic bookends start in the misty, tranquil dawn of volcanic Lake Batur, and end in the majestic power of the ten falls of Sekumpul in a hidden area of North Bali. This is truly a scene you will never forget, and probably not want to leave! This is absolute proof that Bali is indeed the closest thing to paradise on earth… And again, amazingly, few tourists make it here.
Wed. Day 6 – Lake Tamblingan – Water Temple & Boat Silhouettes – Local “Models” Misty Lake & Village Shoot – Munduk Breakfast – Free Time – Afternoon/Sunset Rice Terraces of Pupuan – Overnight Pupuan, West Bali
Lake Tamblingan is a classic lake temple scene we will likely have to ourselves until the best light is gone. In May the water level should be perfect for boat foregrounds & reflections, and there should be rising mists from the water & smoke from the tiny village. The villages are friendly, with many an interesting face for portraiture. Our models, directed by Rarindra, will make extra sure we have plenty of gorgeous compositions to take advantage of.
Breakfast again with a view, and free time to soak in our stunning mountain hotel location in Munduk. Past mid-afternoon we’ll arrive in Pupuan, a rice terrace area that for photography we believe surpasses that of the famous World Heritage site of Jatiluwih. Again – off the beaten path. There are only two hotels!
Thu. Day 7 – Papuan Rice Terrace Landscapes / Rice Farmers Shoot – Free Time – Overnight Negara , West Bali
Since rice farmers are not often evident naturally, we will have arranged for some to join us this morning, in order to add interest and color (other than green!) to your compositions. Many rice fields are easily accessible in this area, so you are free to roam as you will.
Fri. Day 8 – Buffalo Bull Race Action Shoot (Pre-arranged, Sumatra Style) – East Java – Ijen Volcano – Overnight East Java
The bull race season being over, we will hold our own! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity (not fighting for position with 100+ other press photographers) to capture some incredible cultural action images. The style – through water & mud – was original to Bali, but now rarely takes place here. Portraits of the mud splashed racers to follow.
After the buffalo shoot we are off to the island of Java and perhaps the greatest highlight of the trip – the Kawah Ijen volcano.
Sat. Day 9 – East Java – Return Bali – Pemuteran – Free Time – Overnight Pemuteran, North Bali
After arriving early afternoon on Java, we depart for Ijen at midnight! Once at base camp, it’s a 3 kilometer trek to the Volcano rim. It’s demanding for most people, but we met an 80 year old who made it! The key to both the climb and the descent is to take it as slow as you need to.
For anyone choosing not to climb down into the caldera to photograph the blue flame (night time only) or the sulfur workers in intermittent clouds of gas, there are some surreal landscapes to photograph from up top once the sun rises. The workers with heavy loads of yellow sulfur will also be coming up and continuing back to base camp.
For those who make the descent into the caldera and battle the sulfur gas (you will have masks) to get your documentary photos, it’s an adventure you will never forget. When the sun rises to illuminate the scene, you will feel as if you’ve woken up on another planet!
Sun. Day 10 – Menjangan Island Underwater Dive / Snorkel Shoot – 5 Star Villa @ Pyangar Welcome Dinner (prepared by the villa’s world class chef) – Overnight Villa, Central Bali
After a well earned afternoon of rest & relaxation & a good sleep back on Bali, it’s time for your optional underwater shoot on nearby Menjangan Island. David Lazar is an experienced diver and will lead the dive photography group. For those who don’t dive, the snorkeling is great as well. It’s also very easy, in that the current is very slow and you can literally float your way above the coral and along the ‘wall’ to the pick-up boat. Visibility is excellent, with many colorful fish & corals to photograph. 2 Dives / Snorkels, with lunch on the island in between.
